Both numbers can be found on the caseback, if the serial number is missing it suggests that the watch is made some time after 1974. The serial number will be 6 or 7 digits long and the reference will be 7 digits or more normally with 1 or 2 spaces in it. If either contain dots or letters then it is most likely after 1974 and not possible to decode using this decoder. La Compagnie des Montres Longines, Francillon S.A.* grants you, with effect from the purchase date, a twenty-four (24) month warranty on your Longines ® watch and a five (5) year warranty on models with a silicon balance-spring, on the terms set out in this warranty.
The Longines international warranty covers defects in materials and manufacturing that exist at the time of delivery of the Longines watch purchased (“defects”). The warranty takes effect only if the warranty certificate has been dated and fully completed by an official Longines dealer (“valid warranty certificate”). During the term of the warranty and on presenting the valid warranty certificate, you are entitled to have any defect repaired free of charge. In the event that repairs cannot restore your Longines watch to full working order, La Compagnie des Montres Longines, Francillon S.A. undertakes to replace it with an identical Longines watch or another Longines watch with similar characteristics.
The warranty for the replacement watch expires on the same date as the warranty for the replaced watch.

The renowned Official Swiss Chronometer Testing Institute (“Contrôle Officiel Suisse des Chronomètres”, or COSC) was founded in 1973 and is based in La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland. It is an independent public institution serving the Swiss art of watchmaking. Its strict criteria are considered the standard for evaluating the precision of modern wristwatches – whether equipped with mechanical or quartz movements.

The demands placed by the COSC on modern timekeeping are very high. Automatic (self-winding) watches are tested here for 15 days at three different temperatures and in different positions; their rate deviations are measured and recorded scrupulously. In order to obtain the coveted “Chronometer” title the rate precision of a movement must fall within the range of -4/+6 seconds per day.
